Book Review

Lean and Healthy to 100, by Gordon Filepas, is on my list of five favorite books relating to health and wellness. The aspect that is most unique about this book in comparison to many other books is his emphasis on consuming 100+ essential nutrients. There are so many common-sense principles that are related to his recommendation. For instance, you will tend to overeat if you’re not receiving enough essential nutrients, because your body knows that it needs more. The problem is that we’re not giving the body what it needs; when we substitute poor food choices, we gain too much weight. Plant-based sources of minerals are best.

Filepas explains that these nutrients consist of 16 vitamins, 12 amino acids, 3 essential fatty acids, and 70+ trace minerals and elements. According to Filepas, health issues “exist because your body is most likely out of balance and starving for the proper nutrition. Most, if not all, of your issues can most likely be resolved simply by providing your body with the full spectrum of 100+ nutrients it needs, each and every day.” Cellular function does not operate fully and correctly if the body is deficient in nutrients. It doesn’t solve problems to take just a few vitamins, as vitamins don’t work properly in an environment lacking the full spectrum of nutrients. Minerals are necessary in order to properly metabolize vitamins.

Filepas also discusses how nutrients can be lost through exercise (not that you shouldn’t be exercising!), drinking too much water, and transportation of food over long distances. If our body contains excess toxins, our bodily system has to use up nutrients in order to excrete the toxins. If the body is receiving the full spectrum of nutrients, it won’t have to rob an organ, bone, or other tissue in order to gain the necessary nutrients. Digestive and metabolic enzymes can be produced in sufficient quantity if the body has the full spectrum of nutrients.

Cravings for junk food decrease when the body has adequate nutrients.

In Lean and Healthy to 100, you will also find recommendations about when to eat, how to exercise, and the author’s thoughts about raw milk.

Filepas believes that rebounding is one of the best exercises that can be done, because every single cell is exercised at the same time. (If you don’t know what a rebounder is, it’s a mini-indoor trampoline.) Along with many other benefits, supposedly rebounders are very good at tightening skin (eliminating cellulite, etc.) An example of a highly rated rebounder is shown at the bottom of this post.

One thing I like about the approach in Lean and Healthy to 100 is that you don’t have to count calories. If you focus on eating nutrient-dense food, and only eat when you’re hungry, you should be successful in meeting your health goals from a dietary perspective, according to Filepas. There is a lot more helpful information in the book–I highly recommend it as a core reference in ensuring excellent health through all ages.
